“Brownswood Bubblers provides a platform for unsung heroes and
emerging talent from the Worldwide underground. The series distils the
stream of exciting new artists that have become semi-permanent fixtures
in Gilles’ playlists and DJ sets of late to create a suite of perfect
bumps.”
Gilles Peterson comes correct with his ninth instalment in the
much-loved Bubblers series. Shining a spotlight on under-the-radar
talent the world over, Bubblers returns with a line up as diverse and
exciting as the record bag from which they came; a musical barometer to
gauge the sound and stars of 2013.
Truth & Soul’s Lady (featuring Terri Walker) get things rolling,
setting the tone with ‘Money’, bursting with sunshine while effortlessly
marrying modern R&B and hip hop to 60s soul. The Melbourne-based
quartet Hiatus Kaiyote are next up with ‘Nakamarra’ on a deliciously
soulful tip, living up to the hype bestowed by fans including Erykah
Badu and Questlove. The Hics slow things down with a spellbinding duet -
‘Lines’ - cementing their status as a hotly-tipped band set to break
through in 2013. Elsewhere, Trio Tekke nod to traditional Cypriot
folkloric styles via ‘InDa’; Memotone swerves into eerier landscapes
ruled by glacial low-end and ramshackle percussion; Romare arrives by
way of Africa and Chicago, translating tribal rhythms into a footwork
riddim; and The White Lamp and Hackman lead the charge to the dancefloor
with the oh-so infectious ‘Make It Good’ and ‘Forgotten Notes’.
