Cherry Boop & The Sound Makers - The Way I Am (2014)

This LP is a brave step back to the roots of this fantastic, “ Afro-­Americain“ music...The songs are not “Ghetto Brothers“ vibes, their singer is more of a “Marilyn Monroe “ Soul type! The album really is a daytrip from Girona (Spain) where it was recorded to Philadelphia (USA) where it was mixed and mastering.

Olivier Pot composed every track (helped for arrangements by J Barrientos), he used those good vintage microphones, or Wurlitzer, or Glockenspiel and Vibraphone to make it sound like in good old time...

Jef Gilson - Chanson De Jazz (2013)

The French chanson is a song that’s as inextricably linked to French culture as crêpes, croissants and cognac. Their poetic, romantic lyrics are set to music that’s characterised by following the rhythms of the French language rather than those of English, and have been used as serenades since time immemorial. Even in recent years many French artists, from Édith Piaf to Serge Gainsbourg, have added their own particular gems to the roster. Here is a small yet perfectly formed collection of some little known chansons - with a twist of jazz – produced by French jazzman extraordinaire, Jef Gilson.

Caroline Lacaze - En Route (2013)

'En Route' is the stunning debut album of young soulful French chanteuse Caroline Lacaze. It tells her story as a musical roadtrip.

The 'swinging mademoiselle' released a string of successful 45s on renowned labels such as Mocambo, Tramp Records and Legère Recordings, appeared on the Mighty Mocambos' album "The Future is Here" and became a regular feature of the group on the subsequent tour throughout Europe - including support shows for Lee Fields (in Amsterdam's Paradiso and London's Islington Assembly Hall) and a radio live performance at the BBC6 Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show.

Electro Deluxe - Home (2013)

Electro Deluxe is a French band which consists of Thomas Faure (saxophone, programming) Jérémie Coke (bass), Arnaud Renaville (drums), Gaël Cadoux (keyboards), James Copley (voice),Vincent Payen (trumpet) and Bertrand Luzignant (trombone) . They started off in 2001 and melting elements of funk, soul and hip hop they started to evolve into their own category of electro-jazz. Home is their fifth album and it's arguably their best and most ambitious yet. Filled with dancefloor grooves, ecstatic brass and Stevie Wonder-ish fever keys, Home is set to become one of the essential funk n' soul outings not only in France but also worldwide.

Erik Truffaz Quartet: El Tiempo De La Revolución (2013)

There was a generation or two of trumpeters who picked up ideas from the meteoric musical trajectory of Miles Davis and developed them after Miles himself had moved on.

Palle Mikkelborg and Enrico Rava are good examples, but the Swiss-born Frenchman Érik Truffaz is one of the most consistently creative. He just can’t help sounding beautiful and lyrical, whatever the setting.

A good example here is his work on the slightly grungy sound of vocalist Anna Aaron’s song Blue Movie, which has a delightful, whimsical trumpet solo with Harmon mute that could have sprung out of any Davis recording from the 50s or 60s.

NÉBULEUSE​(​s) - INSTRUMENTAL​(​s) (2013)

French rap activist from ConnectiCut, Fulgeance's project, Don Da None push up lyrics to a more poetic dimension, real writen-meaning. Music around lyrics is clear, brilliantly sample-based from soul, classy jazz rarities, like if André Popp meets Baudelaire for a automnal haschich evening. Da None knows how to combine deep lyrics to a never boring electro music, that's what need french rap today.

Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra - Last Odyssey (2012)

The Afro-Latin Vintage Orchestra may not be well-known outside of Europe save for the track "Kingston Abeba," off their 2009 debut album Definitely Roots. It was selected for the Paris DJs' (Grant Phabao and DJouls) mixtape 21st Century Afro Extravaganza. Led by virtuoso percussionist Masta Conga, the French group is truly an orchestra, numbering ten or more players at any given time. Definitely Roots drew Euro raves for its meld of Afro-beat, funk, old descarga, rhumba, reggae, and Western and Ethiopian jazz. They followed it a year later with the stellar Ayodegi: A Modern Afro-Fusion Ensemble, which was rooted in '70s-era jazz funk. Last Odyssey, issued by Ubiquity, is the group's debut international release and provides a stellar introduction to their ambitious musical vision as well as their virtuosic instrumental talent.
